Mayan Hot Chocolate

Right off the bat I knew what I was going to make for this months Recipe Redux.

Theme: Adding merriment to mixes - homemade mixes for the holidays.

Recipe: Mayan Hot Chocolate!

I traveled throughout Peru earlier this year and learned about sweet and spicy Mayan hot chocolate when I took a super cool chocolate-making class.

Sweet agave and spicy cayenne pair nicely with silky smooth (soy) milk and chocolate. The spices and chocolate pieces can be packaged together in small tins or in single serving baggies and would fit nicely in a holiday gift basket. Just add hot milk and viola!

Mayan Hot Chocolate

1 cup hot milk (I used soy milk but any milk works)

2 oz dark chocolate, broken into pieces

2 TBS unprocessed, unsweetened cocoa powder (cacao powder and/or nibs work fabulously)

1 tsp Saigon cinnamon

1 small dash of cayenne pepper (A little goes a long way!)

  • Add all ingredients into mug and mix to combine. Add honey or agave to your liking.

Nothing warms you up on a winter night quite like hot chocolate with a little spice 😉
